Common questions

The optional English voices do not download. What can I do?

Check that you are on Wi-Fi and have enough free space (the pack is about 190 MB), then open the Voices tab and tap the voice pack again. The download continues in the background and resumes after you reopen the app. The built-in multilingual voices work without it.

A PDF opens but there is nothing to read.

The PDF is probably a scan, an image of text without a text layer. TTS Reader recognises the text page by page with on-device text recognition; this can take a while for long documents. Very blurry or handwritten pages may not be recognised.

My language is not read aloud.

TTS Reader reads 31 languages. If a text is in another language, the app tells you it cannot read it yet instead of reading it with the wrong voice. Write to us which language you need.

A web link does not open.

Some pages need a sign-in, block apps, or contain almost no text. If a link fails, open the page in Safari, select the text and share it to TTS Reader, or copy and paste it.

How do I delete a document or the voice pack?

Touch and hold a document on the Home tab and choose Delete. To remove the optional English voices, open the Voices tab and use the menu next to the voice pack. Your documents and listening history are stored only on your iPhone.

Do I need an account or a purchase?

No. TTS Reader is free and has no accounts and no in-app purchases, so there is nothing to sign in to or restore.

Getting started

  1. Open TTS Reader, go through the short welcome screens and pick a voice. The built-in voices read right away.
  2. On the Home or Library tab, choose what to listen to: a file, pasted text, a camera scan, a photo, a web link, or a book from the catalog.
  3. Press play. Tap any sentence to jump to it, and use the speed button to change the pace.

Reporting a problem

If a particular file is read incorrectly, it helps to know the file type and, if you can share it, a sample page. Please do not send documents with personal or confidential information. We aim to reply within a few days.
