Speechify — best for listening on every device

The best-known reader, rated 4.7 from about 527,000 ratings in the US App Store. It has 100+ voices in 40 languages, reads PDFs, scans and web pages, and syncs your library across iPhone, Android, the web, computers and browser extensions. The free tier has 10 standard voices and speeds up to 1.5×; premium voices, faster speeds and, according to Speechify, offline downloads are part of Premium. Compared in detail: TTS Reader vs Speechify.

ElevenReader — best for the most natural AI voices

From ElevenLabs, known for its voice technology. 1,000+ voices, PDF, EPUB, documents and article links. The free plan gives 10 hours of listening a month without offline downloads; paid plans add more hours and offline listening. Rated 4.7 from about 11,000 ratings. A good choice if voice quality matters more than price.

NaturalReader — best for people who also export audio

A long-running reader with 200+ voices in 90+ languages, PDF, EPUB (DRM-free) and a camera scanner. You can start without an account. Free voices are unlimited, with a daily limit on the better voices; MP3 export, which is also how offline listening works, is paid. Rated 4.6 from about 9,200 ratings.

Voice Dream Reader — best for long-time power users

One of the oldest iPhone readers, with offline voices, PDF with text recognition, EPUB and a scanner that runs on the device. In 2024 it moved to a subscription; people who had bought it earlier kept its existing features. New users need a subscription after the trial. Rated 4.5 from about 14,000 ratings.

TTS Reader — best free and private option

Our app. Every feature is free, with no account and no listening limit. Neural voices run on the iPhone: 10 built-in voices read 31 languages offline from the first launch, and 15 English voices are an optional download. PDFs are read in their original layout with word highlighting; scans, photos, EPUB, Word files and web links work too.

Where TTS Reader is weaker

Speak Screen — best for a quick page

Built into iOS: turn on Speak Screen or Speak Selection in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content, then swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear it. Free, no install, works with downloaded Apple voices. There is no library, import or scanner, so for long documents a reader app is more comfortable.

How we compared

We looked at what a person reading on an iPhone needs: price and free limits, whether an account is required, offline use, document formats, languages and platforms. Facts come from each app’s US App Store listing and official website, checked on 25 October 2026. If you see a mistake, write to [email protected] and we will fix it.
